Alicia J.’s journey with North Shore Gymnastics Association (NSGA) spans decades—beginning as a gymnast, evolving into a coach, and now, a parent of competitive athletes. Her deep-rooted connection to the organization offers a unique, multi-generational perspective on its growth, values, and impact on the community.

The Beginning of a Lifelong Relationship

Alicia was one of the very first athletes on NSGA’s inaugural competitive team. Her early introduction to the sport eventually transitioned into her first job at the gym when she was just 15. Fast forward to today—her daughters have followed in her footsteps, participating in North Shore programs from an early age. Her oldest is currently completing her college gymnastics career. And in the midst of ferrying her daughters through their own gymnastics’ careers, Alicia returned to work at NSGA as a coach, reconnecting with a place that helped shape her youth.

A Unique Experience as a Parent and Employee

As a parent, Alicia appreciates North Shore’s holistic approach.

“They’re not all about the gymnastics, they’re all about the kid. North Shore is about helping create good humans.”

Alicia speaks fondly of the way coaches like Ryan and Odi helped shape her daughters’ moral compass, joking, “They did more in raising my girls than my husband and I!”

As an employee, Alicia describes North Shore as a family. “We have a lot of long-time coaches. It’s a friendly, cohesive environment, and that allows for flexibility. Even my kids had their first jobs there. We’re not the only multi-generational family involved—there are several.”

She contrasts North Shore with other clubs that often focus on grinding athletes toward unrealistic goals. “NSGA maintains balance. They love the kids. They’re not just looking to get the maximum number in a class. Your kid walks in the front door, and within two weeks, they know their name.”

Looking Ahead

Alicia is impressed by the gym’s growth since she was a team gymnast as well as with its ambitions for expansion, especially given its location in Maple Plain, a place not commonly seen as a “gymnastics hub.”

“They’ve done an amazing job convincing people they’re worth the drive. They’re active in the community, hosting local high school teams and participating in parades.”

When asked how she describes North Shore to others, Alicia says:

“Super friendly, welcoming, positive environment. A place where kids learn gymnastics and life skills.”
